A Weekend of Wonderful Exploration

Happy Sunday!

As I sit back and wait for The Walking Dead premiere, I am feeling great about the week ahead. This weekend, I took my daughters to the NASA open house event to celebrate their centennial year of operation. We live in Hampton, now known as the place where the events of Hidden Figures took place and it was incredible to walk on the same grounds where Katherine Johnson quietly made history.

My oldest daughter is 8 and the Hidden Figures book/movie have had a profound impact in her at any early age. She now wants to be an aerospace engineer and I want to do what I can to help build and support her life vision. She was in awe of all the wind tunnels and computers. It gave me joy to see the wonder in her eyes.

After a few hours at NASA we made our way to our local comic convention. I managed to see a con friend Stephanie and I made my way out of the vendor room without doing too much damage. Stephanie is the brains behind Red Fish Rue Fish, a company that makes metal bracelets, pins, iron-ons, and much more. I bought my three year old a bookmark and myself this cool Ravenclaw bracelet. I couldn’t get the word “wit” into the photo but Potterheads know how we roll.

My mom came to my house today and we took the kids to the pumpkin patch. It was nice to get out in a field with a wagon and shears while we searched for the perfect pumpkins. I felt a sense of calm in the middle of no where.

And, to cap off a great weekend, I am overjoyed about the latest Doctor Who news!! I am thrilled about Jodie Whittaker as the first woman Doctor, even if I don’t see it as a “representation win.” BUT I think I’m even more excited to see a Black male AND a woman of color (Mandip Gill) as her companions! I haven’t had time to formulate my full thoughts and hopes for them, but I am hype! Look at how wonderful the TARDIS will be with more diversity! Thank you Martha Jones and Bill Potts for paving the way.

So much happy in two days! I hope this feeling lasts all week long 💕

Do you love Doctor Who? How do you feel about the companion announcement?

Let me know how your weekend went and what you want to happen this week.

My Latest, Greatest Hits on the Web and NEKOCON!!!

Happy Fall y’all! I’m a terrible blog owner!

But….it’s because I have been so darn busy. I have had a couple of really cool pieces hit the web. Check out a sample of what I have been up to lately:

*Geek and Sundry: The Webcomics That Are Changing the World

*HelloGiggles: Shondaland is BACK! Here’s Everything That Happened Last Season and What’s Next

I also had my first piece post on Upworthy! For those who aren’t familiar with the website, they post all things positive going on around the world. Of course, as soon as I found out they had a freelance writer’s program, I immediately made it my business to get an article on their page. I wanted to find something that met all of their criteria for an excellent story: surprising, meaningful, visual, and shareable.

I tried a couple of ideas and got hit with REJECTION. Ouch. But, I finally found THE story that I knew would be a home run. While scouring the web, I found an interesting article about a group called Stone Flowers. Based in London, the group is comprised of refugees from all around the world. These people have suffered unimaginable pain and persecution, yet they found their way to this unique music therapy group. They write songs about their experiences and record them in their native language!

Check out this special story here and share it with all of your friends. I don’t know about you, but I love a powerful story!

Next up….a pretty cool piece I recently wrapped up for Paste Magazine! ANDDD…..

I’m going to be a PANELIST AT NEKOCON!! Nekocon is an anime convention that takes place in Hampton, VA. The talented and fabulous Jamie Broadnax from BlackGirlNerds has invited me to come out and do a panel with her about social media. So, if you are in or near the area, come check me out!!! I’ll be the Black chick with the Afro rocking something Doctor Who-ish (yes, even at an anime con).

And remember…I am a freelance writer FOR HIRE. So, for any serious inquiries, HIT ME UP and let’s talk bidness 🙂

Intervention Coverage!!

Hi Everyone!

I am so darn late with posting links to my latest press adventures. A couple of weeks ago, I did press at a geek/nerd con called Intervention. I had the opportunity to write for a couple of places about it, so please check everything out below:

The Mary Sue: Intervention – The Panels and The Powerhouse Woman Behind The Unique Geek Convention

Geeks and Cleats: Intervention is a Geek Entrepreneur Haven

Black Girl Nerds: Webcomics 101: What You Need To Know

Right now, I am working on a super special project and getting ready for a special panel appearance in a couple of months, so I may not be around as much. But, I love you guys!!!

Keeping Up With Tai Gooden

Hellooooo My People!

I have had so much going on lately. First, I had to say a tearful yet joyful goodbye to Necole Bitchie. I was a contributing writer on her popular celebrity blog and she made the tough decision to move on from her blog. I miss writing for her and emailing back and forth with her every day, but I am ecstatic about her decision to pursue happiness. Through her struggle to leave NB behind, I received yet another confirmation that I am doing the right thing by leaving a predictable life behind and diving into freelance writing.

I have also been busy picking up extra work with HelloGiggles, The Mary Sue, and others. It’s been a whirlwind, but I am so grateful for it. I also had the honor of being mentioned on a podcast not once but TWICE. Verity Podcast is an all women-run show that focuses on all things Doctor Who, and they mentioned my article on The Guardian about how to combine talent and fandom love to make a little cash. If you remember…that was the article that caused a bit of backlash toward me so it was good to hear someone say they liked it LOL! They also mentioned my fledgling blog Bad Wolf Blerd. It was definitely an exciting moment, so listen to the podcast!

Next up is a trip to San Diego for business outside of freelance writing, a possible press appearance in Maryland at Intervention Con in August, and then a panel appearance in November. I’ll tell you more about the November event as it approaches 🙂

Have a great weekend!

A Couple of (Unofficial) Words About ReGeneration Who

ReGeneration Who was incredible, but I’m glad to be home! This weekend was so much fun! I loved meeting so many passionate Whovians. A lot of people ask me why I love Doctor Who. Yes, it is a crazy sci-fi show, but it is also a source of wonder and adventure. And, for many viewers, it is an escape from the negative aspects of life.

I heard stories from young kids (and kids at heart) about how they have been bullied and teased for being nerds and how they found comfort in watching the show. The Doctor encourages them to dream big and be fantastic. The Whovian fandom is their family and friends! I’m not exactly a so-called “nerd”, but I have always been rather off-beat so I understand how they feel.

I met so many quirky and creative people. I love them for their energy, kindness, and individuality. I also met a few writers and actors from the series…they too were quirky, funny, and humble!

I will rest a bit tonight because the rest of the week will be filled with video editing, transcribing, and writing my articles! And, I will be posting links to this blog as well as writing my own personal review as a Whovian!

Tai Gooden Heads to Maryland!

A couple of weeks ago, I did an article about Doctor Who conventions in America. If you are wondering what the hell Doctor Who is, check out my previous post or my Whovian experience piece on xojane.

The article was an instant hit among my Whovian friends and I was invited to attend a new convention in Hunt Valley, Maryland. I can’t wait to attend (Re)Generation Who and write about my weekend with Doctor Who fans!!

Writing AND a Whovian-filled weekend? It’s like a dream come true LOL
