Last night, BET aired their annual BET Awards and I decided to tune in. The four hour awards show was filled with a celebration of both past and present music, hilarious commentary, and quite a few memorable moments.

Here are a few highlights from the awards:

They Finally Let Some Other Folks Win:

As expected, Beyonce, Jay-Z, and Drake had the most nominations of the night. And, while they are talented artists, they are not the Alpha and Omega of Black music. They don’t have to win every single year. BET got it right and allowed other artists like Pharrell and August Alsina to have their moments in the spotlight.

Usher Did a Tribute to….Usher:

No, it wasn’t an official tribute to Usher’s 20 year career. But, Usher had to flex for a moment and remind everyone that he has an insane catalog of hits and he doesn’t plan on stopping any time soon. His set was easily the best performance of the night.

Jhene and John Took the Stage:

Jhene Aiko’s smooth vibes meshed perfectly with John’s pitch perfect voice and piano skills. The two teamed up to perform “The Worst” and I am already dying for a remix.

August Bared His Soul:

If you don’t know who August Alsina is, then take a moment and Google him. He has an incredible story and he is beginning to fully realize his music dreams. When he won Best New Artist last night, the 21-year-old singer was overcome with emotion and cried in front of his peers. It was an inspiring moment.

The 90s Came Back For a Couple Minutes:

I’m an 80s baby, so I had a mini party in my living room when BET brought 90s groups Troop, Color Me Badd, and Silk out. They took it back and I didn’t want to come back. Ahhhh….

Chris Rock Had No Chill:

From interviewing Caucasian people at a Monster Truck Rally to test their BET knowledge to talking about everyone in the audience, Chris Rock went in and I had a great time laughing at him. I could not be consoled when he asked a lady what NWA stood for and she said “National White Association.”

Lionel Richie Was the Real MVP:

Mr. Richie received the Lifetime Achievement Award and was honored by Ledisi, John Legend, and Yolanda Adams. Then, the Real MVP himself came onstage and sang “Easy Like Sunday Morning” and that Mambo song that I don’t know the words to.

Breezy Came Back:

Although he didn’t dance as hard as he normally does, Chris came back for a performance of “Loyal” and looked like he was healthy and happy. Good for you Chris!

Trey Hit the Stage:

Last night was a good one for the R&B guys. After joining Chris Brown and August Alsina for a performance of “I Luv It,” Trey had a solo moment when he performed “NaNa”

Nicki Minaj Threw Shade

When Nicki won the Best Female Hip-Hop Artist Award (why do they even nominate other people?), she began a long and slightly confusing tirade. But, my favorite part of her ramble was when she took a shot at Iggy Azalea and commented that “when you hear a Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it” Ouch. But, beef has always been a part of hip-hop, so carry on.

And, last but not least….

Robin Thicke Looked Like He Needed A Hug, Prayer, and Sleep

Lord. Robin Thicke came out and performed a new single entitled “Forever Love” off of his new album Paula. I’m sure you know Robin has been singing to whomever will listen about how bad he wants his estranged wife Paula Patton back. And, although he is aesthetically attractive, he looked tired and miserable last night. The guy could barely make it through the song without crying.

There were many other moments, but those were the ones that stuck out in my head. One day, I hope to go out and cover the BET Awards in person.
